KUHN FU vs DIKEMAN

Prologue

TRIO KALFA/WARELIS/EKINCIOGLU

Ondanks, of dankzij zijn “post romantic jazz and rock disorder”. In Vera staat Kuhn Fu op het podium met TENOR SAXofonist John Dikeman als gast. Met zijn krachtige, onverwoestbare TENOR SAXgeluid worden de fundamenten van Kuhn Fu verstevigd of weggevaagd.

In an edition on drummers, Han Bennink should of course be featured. Han Bennink has been playing a legendary role in Dutch jazz history and he is a ZJFT regular. Everyone should have the opportunity to see him perform at least once and enjoy his relentless energy. Last year he released a duo album with clarinettist Joris Roelofs. In the past few years Han Bennink (1942) has performed regularly with musicians from younger jazz generations (Ben van Gelder, Reinier Baas, Benjamin Herman). The age difference hardly ever plays a role, it’s the energy on stage that counts.

Bassist Bert van Erk is a pivotal player in the Groningen jazz scene. For years he has been presenting a series of trio concerts for the Stichting Jazz in Groningen with a variety of guest musicians. It looks like the bassist couldn’t choose between two alto saxophonists, and so he invited both Miguel Martinez and Michael Moore to perform at the opening concert at the Garnwerd tent. All band members will contribute pieces to this special ZJFT project. Considering the great things we’ve heard from these musicians in the past, we can warmly recommend the Garnwerd opening concert.

At the Groningen conservatory the Israeli Ziv Taubenfeld specialized in the bass clarinet. He took part in the Michael Moore Pool and from the very first moment he has been active in the Kuhn Fu circus. After his move to Amsterdam the bass clarinettist has regularly surfaced in the alternative jazz scene of the northern part of the Dutch capital. Two years ago he brought the Israeli Bones Trio to the ZJFT. Now he’ll be presenting his new project Full Sun, a quartet with a prominent role for the Portuguese trumpeter Luis Vicente. What you may expect, is intuitive improvised music with strong melodic themes as a starting point.

Brussels based accordionist Tuur Florizoone is a popular guest at the ZJFT. The duo concert with his fellow accordion player Didier Laloy in Den Ham (2014) was met with great enthusiasm. In Oldehove (2016) his trio with tuba man Michel Massot and cellist Martine Horbaczewski appealed to the audience’s imagination. The Aduard church was also the scene of his performance with trumpeter Eric Vloeimans in 2013. And his trio Tricycle acted as a stand-in at the ZJFT in Leegkerk. But the Tricycle music is best suited for the monastery church in Aduard. Florizoone’s magnificent trio celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. And that’s reason enough to ask Tricycle to return once again.

The piano/percussion combination is one that appeals to the imagination. Without the chords determined by the double bass the musicians are freer, and the music can go anywhere. The talented young drummer Jamie Peet allows even more space for Jasper van 't Hof to give rhythmic commentary. From the 1960s Van 't Hof has been specializing in using electronic sounds. Together with drummer Pierre Courbois he carved out a typically European counterpart to American jazz-rock in the band Association PC.

'Great Groningen Jazz Adventures’ was the headline in newspaper Dagblad van het Noorden’s review of the debut album by Martin Tervoort's quartet Voort4. Reedist Tervoort presented his own group before at the ZJFT 2014 (Saaksum), and he also surfaced in the Dutch Impro Academy. Nowadays you can hear the influence of Steve Lacy when he picks up the soprano sax. Voort4’s flavour reminds one of the Groningen free funk bands from the 1980s (Noodband, Combo Stamp, Artisn't). Maybe these roots have become a little bit less fiery, but they are still served up as tastily as ever before.

Sanem Kalfa is best known for her duo with George Dumitriu. The Turkish singer met the Romanian guitarist (and violist) at the Groningen conservatory. As a spontaneous action Sanem entered the Montreux Jazz Competition as a jazz singer and managed to win it (with Quincy Jones acting as chairman of the jury). After this, she started using her Turkish cultural background in her singing. At a memorable try-out in the Atelierkelder with bassist Esat Ekincioglu (Kuhn Fu, AVA Trio) she made an indelible impression with her mysterious adaptations of Turkish folk songs. They recently expanded their duo to include the Polish pianist Marta Warelis, who also left many a footprint at Atelier Il Solo in Cantina.

Since 2017 they’ve revived the band, with a new drummer. A fresh breath of air has been blown into the quartet and the original musical ideas were given free rein. Stalwarts Tobias Klein (Spinifex) and Lothar Ohlmeier (Ninsk, Julie Sassoon Quartet) have given the acoustic quartet a new sound. The second incarnation is even better than the first, featuring an inventive rhythm section, including a bass player that may be well known to experienced jazz cyclists: Meinrad Kneer (Sequoia Bass Quartet).

At the ZJFT 2011 Jeb Bishop performed with the Vandermark Five in Niehove. Last year he joined his German trombone colleagues Matthias Müller and Matthias Muche for the album Konzert für Hannes, an homage to trombonist Johannes Bauer. The Adorp church is a great place for an acoustic string or wind quartet. Two years ago the Vertigo trombone quartet from Zürich was featured here. Now four young clarinettists from Vienna will pay the church a call. Woody Black 4 includes the deep sonority of three bass clarinets. Their original compositions are inspired by a broad spectrum of jazz, contemporary composed music, folk music and even arranged pop songs. For the past six years the Woody Black 4 clarinet virtuosos have been travelling the border country of world music, improv and avant-garde. Sometimes with melodious strains, sometimes with a shrill dissonant, but always with a warm sound.

His clarinet playing made an impression in the group Tiltan (Adorp, ZJFT 2013). His fiery tenor sound can be heard in The Ambush Party (featuring cellist Harald Austbø, who will perform a solo concert at Harkema), but in his trio Native Speaker Natalio Sued is his own man. In his pieces for the trio his Argentinean folk roots show less. Native Speaker has developed into a delicious tenor sax trio. Lovers of the heavy tenor sax, a la Sonny Rollins, will have to flock to Fransum.

Their vibe is reminiscent of the energetic Thomas Chapin Trio from 1990s New York. This is what freejazzblog.org wrote about their successful triple album Live in Europe: 'There’s an aura of historical free jazz heroes like Ayler, Coleman and Cherry which is present across all three concerts, but at the same time melodies are being reinvented in new and unexpected ways, ideas thrown out and brought back in new shapes – and it’s all happening live!'

The ZJFT will keep the memory of Sean Bergin always alive. Over thirty years ago the South-African saxophonist, flutist and concertina player (who died in 2012) started a ten-piece group to perform his own compositions. The repertoire was recorded in a single afternoon at the Amsterdam Bimhuis and resulted in one of the greatest modern Dutch jazz albums. We’re talking about Kid´s Mysteries by Sean Bergin and M.O.B. (1987 Nimbus Records). A series of CDs followed (from MOB to SongMob). Sean Bergin is hardly forgotten, and his pieces are still regularly performed by the ICP Orchestra and in the Amsterdam café De Engelbewaarder, where Bergin led the Sunday sessions. The rhythm section of those years, led by drummer Victor de Boo, plus a MOB horn section, has brushed up Sean Bergin’s catchy compositions, resulting in amusing as well as bittersweet moments. For new listeners, a surprising world of music will certainly open up.

After Eric Vloeimans, Anton Goudsmit and Martin Fondse singer/pianist Ruben Hein is the new leader of the Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest (Dutch National Youth Jazz Orchestra; NJJO). Every two years, a careful pick is made from the talented young players populating the Dutch conservatories. For these fresh musicians the NJJO proves to be a valuable experience. There’s a real chance that the listeners will be enthralled by musicians who will make up the future of jazz in years to come. Singer/pianist Ruben Hein is making a fast career in the entertainment business, but he also performed jazz at the ZJFT 2009 as a member of Ernst Glerum’s Omnibus. In Hans’s barn he will lead a 19-piece orchestra full of horns and strings.

DRUMS

In the 1960s, drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo fled to London as a member of The Blue Notes, featuring South-African musicians like Dudu Pukwana and Mongezi Feza. In pianist Chris McGregor’s ground-breaking Brotherhood of Breath he combined kwela and free jazz and brought it up to the boil. In the 1990s Louis Moholo-Moholo’s own band Viva la Black toured with Sean Bergin and Tobias Delius in its ranks. Twenty years later, saxophonist Delius is invited to join Moholo-Moholo's present band 5 Blokes, especially for the ZJFT. The famous drummer was a guest at the ZJFT before, in groups led by Tristan Honsinger and in Cor Fuhler and Tobias Delius’s carte blanche series. Louis owes his double last name to the fact that he is the oldest member of his South-African family, at 79 years old.

DRUMS

All was set to record a CD when band leader Abu Djigo, a Belgium based Senegalese virtuoso guitarist suddenly died. As an homage to him, his musical friends did finish recording the album for homerecords.be this summer. 'A movingly beautiful album' (moors magazine). The band subsequently continued as ABU. Deliciously danceable West-African music for the closing party in the Garnwerd festival tent.
